Oregon's new Distracted Driving Law (HB 2597) goes into effect October 1st. Are you ready? Are your employees that drive as part of their jobs ready?
The Oregon Department of Transportation has created a Fact Sheet for HB 2597. Download this and share it with your employees that drive as part of their jobs (or share it with all of your employees). Share it with your friends and family members too. Fines ranging from $130 to $1,000 for a first offense should get everyone's attention!
Take Charge Employers should start by sharing the Fact Sheet at the link below.
The bigger concern is that the statute's requirements will be used by courts as the standard of care when employers are sued after employee on-the-job auto accidents. If you do not have a cell phone safety policy, now is the time to adopt one. If you do have a policy, now is the time to review that policy.
Distracted driving is a big problem. It has also been against the law for some time. With this new law, the requirements are stricter and the fines are higher. Take action now to comply with the law, prevent employee accidents and prevent post-accident lawsuits.
